The Justice League of America gather for the first time (as drawn by Alex Ross)Alex Ross exploded onto the comic book scene in 1996’s Kingdom Come, a series crafted with Mark Waid set in the possible future of the DC Comics Universe. He remains one of the most important artists of the modern comic book world, his paintings of iconic characters serving as a shorthand version for the term ‘superhero.’ As a child of the 1970’s, he was strongly influenced by the Super Friends cartoon that he had viewed in his youth and includes many references to the cartoon in his work. In fact, much of his design work includes a massive dose of the Super Friends, as drafted by the dear departed master, Alex Toth (the same man behind Space Ghost, Johnny Quest and much more). An unbeatable team made up of the biggest and best superheroes in comics, Super Friends was very important for many members of my generation regarding comic books.

  • Lex Luthor Batman Vs Superman

I enjoy the first few years, but for many the cartoon really came into its own with the 1978 run, Challenge of the Super Friends. Beset by an assembly of their greatest foes, the Super Friends met the brilliantly twisted schemes of the Legion of Doom week after week.

Lex luthor supergirl

The Legion of DoomBack when there was a reason to get up early on Saturday mornings that did not involve diapers, the Super Friends served as a kind of gateway to the world of comic books. The cartoon had been on for a few years previously, but Challenge of the Super Friends was the real deal. It featured somewhat obscure heroes and villains crossing swords with the fate of humanity in the balance. Where else would a kid see Gorilla Grodd, Solomon Grundy, the Riddler, Cheetah, the Riddler, Black Manta, Giganta, Captain Cold, the Toymaker, Braniac, Sinestro, the Scarecrow and Bizzaro threaten the peace?

Likewise, Green Lantern, the Flash and Hawkman were welcome additions to the animated world (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman were already mainstays of the 70’s zeitgeist), even if Green Lantern sounded like he was voiced by Sir Laurence Olivier. As a unique twist, the Challenge of the Super Friends was mainly centered on the villains and their madcap schemes to defeat their enemies. The plans were varied and bizarre (one dealt with a ‘Living Monolith’ that rested in a Hellish part of the underground, another dealt with a demonic entity that granted the Legion of Doom power over the dead), but one of the oddest involved a subject that comic book fanatics hold dear, the he Secret Origins of the Super Friends.Lex Luthor, Superman’s arch enemy and leader of the Legion of Doom, has found a way to view the origins of the three most powerful members of the Super Friends. Through the use of his unknown technology, Luthor reveals the seminal moments of Wonder Woman, Superman and Green Lantern (betcha thought I was gonna say Batman, right? In Super Friends Batman is useless without his utility belt).

By sending himself and Cheetah into the past, he wrecks history, thus removing Green Lantern and Wonder Woman from the equation that has presumably kept them from conquering the Super Friends.A brief trip through time and space allows Luthor to divert the interstellar crib/space craft delivery little baby Kal-El to Earth where he would have been found by the well-meaning country folk, Martha and John Kent. The pod continues to a nameless planet orbiting a red sun where Superman will never be born.Viewers are presented almost immediately with an alternate history that, to be honest, barely differs from the world that they knew. None of this makes any sense, of course. If the most powerful members of the Super Friends (or Justice League of America) never existed, how could the Legion of Doom have altered history?

Surely, tampering with the time stream would produce catastrophic effects! Yet the Legion of Doom is exuberant and capture the remaining members, ordering them to engage in a battle to the death! Batman, Robin, the Flash and Black Vulcan (a kind of flying version of Black Lightning) steal what appears to be an important computer tape and return to their HQ to plot their next move.Somehow the tape contains the original, unaltered history in which Superman, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman are alive, prompting the team to travel back in time and undo the interference in the proper course of time (thus introducing a further temporal paradox). Apparently, the JLA is now an integral part of the secret origins of their own members. That’s not a headache or anythingBefore you can say ‘Blinovitch Limitation Effect,’ the Super Friends attack the Legion of Doom with their old members back in action. Green Lantern forms massive emerald anchors that stop the Legion’s flying HQ, Superman burns a hole in the hull of the craft to free the remaining team members (Hawkman, Aquaman and Samurai) only to see Green Lantern also one of the captured teammates!Huh??!!Well, things like this happened all the time in Super Friends.

Hawkman would spontaneously lose his wings, Batman’s symbol would revert colors and Green Lantern would suddenly have three arms. The sudden appearance of a second Green Lantern is to be expected, I guess.Super Friends remains an important part of the comic book experience. The plots are frantic, the dialog stilted and the animation shaky, yet they perfectly presented the origins of the JLA! Very few of the animated versions of comic book characters showed as close an eye to detail as this one did. They even presented Batman’s origin in its final year! Just imagine if the Legion of Doom had disrupted Batman’s origin! I can just picture Gorilla Grodd getting in the path of Joe Chill’s hand gun fast forward to Bruce Wayne dressed as a man-gorilla fighting crime.Currently there is nothing remotely like the Super Friends on the air and frankly I think that kind of thing has a direct impact on comic book readership.

The Bruce Timm Justice League/Justice League Unlimited came close to drawing people back to the realm of superheroes, but somehow failed to have as strong an impact as Super Friends had (despite being much better made). I wonder what a world without these campy cartoons would be like and I shudder. Then I think of Gleek the space monkey and I know real fear.Part OnePart Two.

Wonder Woman Day Five Poster by Matt WagnerA prestigious fundraiser to raise awareness for domestic violence shelters and women’s crisis hot-lines, Wonder Woman Day is an event that should make every comic book fan proud. With all of the blockbuster films, DVDs and video games bearing the symbols of our favorite characters, it warms my heart that Wonder Woman is being utilized in such a positive way. Every year this event raises money for a worthy cause with the support of several well known artists as well as those new to the field of comic books. It’s easy to forget the roots of the modern cartoons such as the upcoming Batman animated movie, Under the Red Hood and the Brave and the Bold TV series. As it happens, many of the creators behind these projects were heavily influenced by the same Saturday Morning cartoon, Super Friends. It may seem corny and dated (because it is), but at the time many young boys had their minds blown by this cartoon simply because it featured superheroes ripped directly from the pages of their favorite comic books. Superfriends (circa 1973)Filmation had certainly paved the way with their Superman, Batman, Aquaman and other Justice League cartoons years before, but it has to be said that many of us are familiar with these characters today because of the Super Friends. Warner Home Video has been steadily releasing the Super Friends on DVD for some time now, with the initial 1973 season the latest addition.

If you have a taste for nostalgia, these discs are a lot of fun, and if you have never seen the Justice League of America battling an army of Bizarros and Cheetahs or trying to stop Gorilla Grodd from turning the world’s population to simians or better still, if you have never heard of ‘,’ you need to check these toons out.Official release below. The Joker pushes Batman to the brink of unrestrained violence in “Batman: Under the Red Hood”Brandon Vietti is just two weeks away from his solo directorial film debut with Warner Home Video’s looming release of Batman: Under the Red Hood, a dark, emotionally wrenching journey as Batman’s past and present collide.James Tucker is enjoying another successful season producing the Warner Bros. Season 1 Volume 2 on DVD on July 20, 2010. Available for the first time since its debut in 1973, this highly-anticipated deluxe two-disc collector’s set features eight exciting one-hour episodes starring the most recognizable DC Comics super heroes and villains of all time.Classic Super Friends openingSuper Friends! Season 1 Volume 2 follows the adventures of Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman and Aquaman as they join forces to save the world from unthinkable disasters. This crime-stopping squad, along with heroes in training Wendy, Marvin and Wonder Dog, combine their special superhuman skills to defeat the evil villains at hand.

The collection also features DC Comics favorites Plastic Man, The Flash and Green Arrow. Each hour is packed with timeless adventures of the universe’s greatest heroes as they pave the way for a brighter future. Both Vietti and Tucker fondly recall the wide-reaching impact Super Friends had on their young lives.“The Super Friends show was my first exposure to the world of DC super heroes,” says Vietti, who also co-directed Superman Doomsday and was the director for much of the first season of Batman: The Brave and the Bold. “The show was on TV during the first 12 years of my life so I was the prime audience. From the first episode I ever watched, I was hooked! My parents bought me the DC action figures, the Super Friends bed sheets, and, of course, the Underoos. I guess the Super Friends show was a rather formative influence on me as a kid since I now have career making cartoons about DC super heroes.”“To me, Super Friends really represented what Saturday morning cartoons were all about,” remembers Tucker.

Gonset gsb 101 manual transmission problems. “When I think of Super Friends, I’m really reminded of waking up at 6 a.m., getting my bowl of cereal, and camping in front of the TV for about four or five hours of cartoons.“It was probably the first show I saw that featured DC Comics characters that wasn’t in reruns. It was just cool seeing heroes in animation that I was reading in the comics at the time. And even though I knew the cartoon wasn’t at the same intensity level as the comics, it was still cool. The novelty of watching animated super heroes was enough to make up for the goofy stories and non-violence.”The series also placed some important design and character seeds in minds of two of the leading super hero animation veterans in the industry today.“I loved the scale of the adventures in Super Friends,” Vietti adds. “Episodes would often take place in fantastic locations under ground, under the sea, or in deep space.

There was no end of aliens, monsters and evil scientists that had to be stopped before executing some evil plan. The Super Friends show was my first exposure to stories and characters like that, so that kept me tuning in again and again.”“I thought the designs were appealing at the time – I didn’t know Alex Toth had done them, but they felt like the comic book designs,” Tucker says. “They had the anatomy that the comics had, and there was a simplicity to them that I can appreciate now but I probably wasn’t aware of back then.“Super Friends was a consistent version of the DC characters when you just didn’t get that in another cartoon show. It kept those characters alive in my imagination, and I know it has had a direct effect on the way I work in animation today. I always say that Batman: The Brave and the Bold is the show I was watching when I watched Super Friends.

The spirit, the fun, the excitement and the innocence of that series is what I wanted to capture with Batman: The Brave and the Bold.”. New Wonder Woman design by Jim LeeIf you breath oxygen you have most likely seen the new costume designed by Jim Lee for Wonder Woman, star of possibly the longest running superheroine comic book. The departure from the outfit that the hero has worn since she was created back in 1941 by William Moulton Marston (inventor of the lie detector). Marston viewed his creation as a kind of signpost heralding the Feminist movement many years later. “Not even girls want to be girls so long as our feminine archetype lacks force, strength, and power.

Not wanting to be girls, they don’t want to be tender, submissive, peace-loving as good women are. Women’s strong qualities have become despised because of their weakness. The obvious remedy is to create a feminine character with all the strength of Superman plus all the allure of a good and beautiful woman.” A strong and intelligent hero, Wonder Woman was on a mission of love and peace, making her an oddity in the pages of comics featuring mainly fist-flying heroes. As a member of the Justice Society of America, Wonder Woman was inexplicably relegated to secretarial duties and was rarely involved in adventures. What a weird idea, to give an Amazon dictation duties! Wonder Woman got more respect when she joined the Justice League of America in the 1960’s where she was given the chance to show just how powerful she really is.In the 1970’s, Linda Carter donned the famous outfit as Wonder Woman, bringing the character an increase in popularity. In fact, I would venture to say that it is because of the Linda Carter TV version of Wonder Woman that most people have any idea the character exists. Wonder Woman was also a member of the Super Friends, the Saturday Morning cartoon phenomenon.

In comics, Wonder Woman received a major revamp in 1984 thanks to George Perez that many readers still look upon as the best run of the series. The Bruce Timm Justice League cartoon of the past ten years series re-introduced Wonder Woman to a new audience that had little to knowledge of the superheroine. While Warner Bros.

Has deliberated over a live action project, a solo animated film was released that was so good that I see little reason in a feature film being made.New Wonder Woman scribe J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) defended the change by asking “What woman only wears only one outfit for 60-plus years?” which I think misses the point. She’s not a woman and it’s not an outfit. She’s an iconic comic book superhero who wears the American flag as a costume in her mission of peace in the ‘world of men.’ I don’t want to harp too much on JMS for his statement as I am sure it was not intended to be dissected, but it speaks in part to the problem with redesigning these creations, DC characters especially. In my opinion, the main superheroes of DC Comics (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern.

Etc) are iconic, bearing more in common with modern mythological beings than pulp heroes. There are several key elements to each character that make them instantly recognizable and when those elements are altered or entirely removed, they become something else.

This can be used to create a great impact, like the Azrael version of Batman who looked nothing like the traditional blue and grey detective or the ‘electric blue’ Superman who looked so awful everyone knew it was a very temporary change. In Wonder Woman’s case, this is not the first drastic change in appearance. Her breastplate, for instance, that originally bore the image of an eagle was changed in the 1970’s to a double W to honor the women’s movement (this was reverted post-1985, of course).

At one point she lost her powers entirely and wore a cat suit a’la Emma Peel. There is also the dreaded ‘biker outfit’ from the 1990’s which is more than a little similar to the ‘new look’ on display in the current issue.

But most readers agree that the iconic look works best and that is why each time her look changed, in time Wonder Woman went back to donning her traditional uniform.(Image via)Some readers have called it impractical or something that a stripper would wear but I completely disagree. It’s about as impractical as Superman wearing a cape or as racy as Storm’s Cockrum outfit, but it is also part of Wonder Woman’s specific image. You can’t escape it.If the costume needs to be updated at all, I prefer this version. Alex Ross' classic take on Green Arrow and Black CanaryIn addition to the feature film, the Superman/Batman: Apocalypse Special Edition Blu-Ray™ and 2-Disc Special Edition DVD include the third DC Showcase animated short, Green Arrow. Screenwriter Greg Weisman’s story finds Oliver Queen at the Star City International Airport to pick up his girlfriend, only to be forced into action as Green Arrow to protect the 10-year-old Princess of Vlatava from his old nemesis Merlyn the Magnificent and the League of Assassins. The short features the voices of Neal McDonough (Desperate Housewives) and Malcolm McDowell (Entourage).

Bruce Timm is executive producer.Superman/Batman: Apocalypse 2-Disc Special Edition DVD features more than 1 1/2 hours of exciting extra content, including:Feature film (est. The latest of the DC Universe animated projects, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths was brought to us by a combination of animation greats including writer Dwayne McDuffie (Justice League), producer Bruce Timm (Batman, Superman, Justice League and each DC Universe animated film) and directors Sam Liu (Planet Hulk, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies) and producer Lauren Montgomery (Green Lantern: First Flight, Wonder Woman). The anticipation of this feature was great to say the least. Developed out of a story line intended for the final season of Justice League before it was reformatted as Justice League Unlimited, Crisis on Two Earths is a slug-fest between two universes of heroes and villains. The voice acting cast is no less stellar than the characters of Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. Actors Chris Noth as Lex Luthor, William Baldwin as Batman and Superman Mark Harmon may lead the cast, but it has to be James Woods who steals the show as the evil genius Owlman. His calm dulcet tones off-set a maniacal brain set on nothing short of complete destruction of all life, simply because in a universe of infinite possibilities it is the only action worth making. Owlman versus Batman on Earth PrimeSPOILERS AHEADThe story begins on a polar opposite Earth where the last remaining superheroes Lex Luthor and the Jester are making a raid on a Crime Syndicate base.

The Jester sacrifices himself so that Luthor can escape to Earth-1 and make a plea for help, leaving the Crime Syndicate confused as to why they should be worried by Luthor’s actions. After all, they just saw the last of the opposition. Luthor jumps to a parallel Earth where the Justuce League is in the beginning stages of putting together an orbital space station. The League is understandably dubious of Luthor’s claims that he does not have an ulterior motive in seeking out help, but almost immediately accepts that he is from another dimension. That is the true measure of how evil Luthor is. People would sooner accept the existence of parallel realities than Luthor not having some secret ploy up his sleeve.

Batman is not so easily swayed by the mission to the other Earth and decides to stay behind to watch after the League’s first responsibility, their own Earth. The Jester and Lex LuthorOn the parallel Earth, Luthor and the Justice League embark on systematic attacks on the Crime Syndicate’s numerous operations. It seems that the Crime Syndicate is set up in much the same way as the Mafia, with territories split up between the seven ruling powers. Under each of the seven is a gang of lieutenants, granted power by their boss. Presiding over them all is Ultraman (no relation) who is by far the meanest hombre of them all.

But being the meanest isn’t everything. While Ultraman blusters and spouts about being the toughest of the bosses, Owlman is quietly pulling strings in the background.

Building on Luthor’s research into parallel realities, Owlman has discovered that there is a nearly infinite number of Earths where each possibility is played out. All of the Earths hinge on a theoretical Earth Prime where all of reality was ‘born.’ It is Owlman’s ambition to plant a bomb on Earth Prime, thereby wiping out all of existence. In the end only the combined forces of both Earths can possibly stop Owlman’s plot for complete annihilation.Even for Warner Bros., the animation is better than anything they have produced to date. The action sequences are fluid and energetic, the character designs unique and iconic and the facial expressions fill of life. I’ve been watching all of these comic book animation projects as they come out and can usually find little flaws here and there but in terms of presentation that was just not the case here.Continuity wise, the Justice League in this film was a strange amalgam of the DC Comics world from a few years back, meaning that Martian Manhunter wore the blue and red costume and the new Firestorm was running around.

The inclusion of the classic Aquaman and Hal Jordan Green Lantern off-sets the time period greatly but it’s really not a good idea to gaze too deeply into the continuity abyss. In my mind, this film captured of not the exact roster then the spirit of the JLA of my youth circa issue 200 and that is a very good thing. The voice acting had good and bad moments. The aforementioned Woods really stole the show while I struggled with my opinion on William Baldwin as Batman. I can’t put my finger on what was missing, but the voice of the dark knight detective was lacking somewhat.

President Wilson (alias Deathstroke the Terminator) voiced by Bruce Davison was just awful on the other hand and only developed into something worthy of the character later in the film. Gina Torres (of Firefly and Cleopatra 2099 fame) as Power Woman was just phenomenal.

It seemed that each scene she was in, her voice was sultrier than the last even if she was mopping the floor with Batman’s face. The Crime SyndicateRegarding the voice acting cast, Bruce Timm had a lot to say:This may sound confusing and contradictory, but in terms of just branding the movie, the decision was made that we should really do everything in our power to separate it from the TV continuity as possible. I love Kevin Conroy. I love George Newbern. They’re terrific actors and it would have been easier, frankly, to cast them in this movie. But again, for the sake of branding, we decided we needed to go with other actors to play those parts to further separate this from the TV continuity. Of course, it’s always a challenge to go back and re-cast these guys.

You just sit in the room with the director and with Andrea Romano, our voice director, and just brainstorm ideas. “Who would be a good Batman? Or would be a good Superman or whoever?” It’s an involved process but ultimately, I’m thrilled with the cast we did get and I think they all did a great job.Curiously enough, James Woods was the one person that actually ended up playing the same part that he would have played if we had gone ahead with “Worlds Collide” all those years ago.

Lex Luthor Family

Back in the day, he was our choice for Owlman. Unfortunately, he and Andrea Romano, and I think even Dwayne, they might be misremembering it, because I’m pretty sure we had cast him as Owlman. They’re saying he was originally cast as Lex Luthor in the earlier version, but I’m pretty sure he was Owlman. Everybody else, we had a completely different cast in mind.

We, frankly, thought he was a longshot. He’s a big name actor and he’s really, really good and too expensive. But at the time, he signed on for it, and years later, I was like, “Well, he was our original choice for Owlman. Let’s see if he would still be interested.” And he still was, and there we were.Overall the Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths is just phenomenal. There are some logistical problems with the film that make much more sense when you realize that it was intended to operate as a bridge from Justice League to Justice League Unlimited, such as the ending that hints at a sequel that is not coming, but it is still lots of fun.Not as potent in meaning or polished in look as Justice League New Frontier, Crisis on Two Earths is more concerned with actions and super battles but there’s nothing wrong with that really. If you enjoyed the Batman, Superman and Justice League cartoons, you owe it to yourself to check out Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths on DVD.

Justice League: Crisis on Two EarthsBased on the long-running comic book super team, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths pits Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, the Flash and Green Lantern against their opposites, the Crime Syndicate from another universe where evil prevails. The only hero of this negative version of ‘our’ universe is the sole survivor of the alternate Justice league, Lex Luthor. As unlikely as it may seem, Lex and the League must join forces to defeat a threat that could encompass all of reality. While the comic book has run almost uninterrupted from the 1960’s, most people know the Justice League from their animated exploits in either the Super Friends series from the 70’s or the more recent Justice League cartoon. A group of the heaviest hitters in the DC Universe, the team is an homage to the Justice Society of America from the 1940’s. When superheroes came back into fashion in what is referred to as the Silver Age of comics, the concept of a combined force for good was revived and the Justice League was born.

I’ve only been to Graumann’s Chinese Theater once in my life and it was to see Daredevil on opening day. Nevertheless, I can confirm that the place has an air of both majesty and grandeur. The heavy curtains part to reveal a glistening silver screen while the light reflects around the high vaulted ceilings so wonderfully you almost miss the movie being projected in front of you (in the case of Daredevil, a definite bonus). For all of the wonder and magic inside there is a level of absurdity outside as grown men and women dress up as fictional characters. Every character from every blockbuster film is represented in uncompromising tights to uncomfortable body suit, but I only had eyes for the comic book superheroes. The documentary Confessions of a Superhero may appear to simply be an analysis of freaks and an opportunity to point a finger at them in laughter, but I found it to be something else altogether. This may come from the fact that the people in the film are almost always in costume and take their roles so seriously that in time they appear to mutate into a kind of bizarro version of the oft-loved fictitious heroes. All four of the actors profiled are alike in one way, they came to Hollywood to make it their stories sound like comic book origins.Christopher Dennis is a former crystal meth addict who had an awakening on the couch then swore to honor his mother’s dying wish to become an actor.

Lex Luthor Batman Vs Superman

Armed with an uncanny resemblance to his role model Christopher Reeves, Dennis walks the streets as Superman, shepherding the newcomers in the ways of a dress-up hero and bringing joy to all (for a donation he refuses to ask for).Bearing a close resemblance to George Clooney, Maxwell Allen attempts to escape his dark past as the avenging angel of the night Batman. He also has anger issues and feels that while he should overcome them, there are those out there who just deserve a beating and he’s ready to perform that service.Jennifer Gehrt is a home grown Southern girl from a quiet town that offered her nothing but frustration. A former cheerleader, she sought acceptance in the cruel world of casting agents, dressed in a revealing Wonder Woman costume.Former NC-native Joe McQueen sold his Super Nintendo for a Greyhound bus ticket to fame and fortune only to arrive in LA in the midst of the Rodney King riots.

After living first in the hills then hiding out in alleys, he finally found success as a wandering Hulk, the cheerful if muffled green monster of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. One connecting thread amongst three of the four actors is that they are not exactly comic book fans. They seem drawn to dress up as their respective characters almost by fate. Seeing Maxwell attend a therapy session in Batman costume, you’d almost think you were seeing the Dark Knight in therapy (finally!) rather than a troubled down on his luck actor. Gehrt is so self-conscious of her body and hungry for attention that she wraps her arms around the role of Wonder Woman with glee, while McQueen is all but swallowed up by his massive (and surely uncomfortable) Hulk outfit.Dennis is another story and one that needs to be seen to be believed. I’m still not 100% sure what dressing up as Superman means to him, but it’s definitely some really heavy stuff. All four embody the sadness that is Hollywood and the joy with which it devours young hopefuls lost in the world looking for some kind of identity.

The movie also shines an interesting light on the American pre-occupation with fame and fiction. If you think about it, the average person spends far more time living in fantasy than actually doing anything so dressing up as a fictional character is a kind of merger between the two. In short, the audience member becomes an active participant in the fantasy. In any case, it’s a weird-ass movie and one that you should check out.Recommended.
