Netgear Serial Number Missing In Sequence

I received a WDNR3700 Refurb purchased on the internet. There are stickers on the bottom for 'security pin' and 'mac number' but the spot reserved for the serial number is blank. The box doesn't have a serial number on it, nor does any of the paperwork. How do I register the product.

The other problem is that for the past few days, when I click on the Netgear website link for product registration, it times out and says that the page noes not exist. Just for the heck of it, I tried it on a computer at my office and got the same result. I figured that the registration page would explain why a refurbished Netgear route does not have a serial number. Does anyone know what the deal is? I am replacing an very old Netgear router that has given me years of reliable service and I want to replace it with a newer Netgear, but if I can't register my warranty I have a problem.

'You will not be able to register a NETGEAR device without a serial number' -is what the support page jlewter pointed to says. That is a deceptive way of saying refurbished products will NOT get warranty repair or replacment!

Refurbished Netgear routers (of which there are MANY - which tells you they have a problem to begin with) have their serial sticker REMOVED as a sneaky way of withholding warranty service, WITHOUT their having to say so. They say you have 30 days email 'technical support' (from India) but if there's a hardware issue they won't accept return without serial number. The Netgear 'limited warranty' paper that came with the refurbished router also stated '30 day hardware warranty' but apparently that is a lie!! If you are going to refuse hardware service/exchange on refurbished routers they should be clearly labelled and sold as 'AS IS' equipment (despite the misleading 30 days of 'support' from India). The law is clear on this, and to do otherwise is FRAUD. Shame on you Netgear, and all employees thereof who are aware of this situation (including 'senior' forum members!). I am not a staff memember of NG nor any company that deals with them on a formal or informal basis.

The link I pointed you to has the following statement. Refurbished products are not eligible for telephone support, and are only supported by email for thirty days from the date of purchase. No one should use ANY mfgr's telephone support because I have yet to find a company (even my isp, or utility company!!) that doesn't outsource the calls.

I personally wouldnt buy any refub equipment unless the price was WAY cheaper than the OEM/Retail part. Refub can come along in several forms.

Serial

One of those is simply where imcompetent store staff have allowed a customer to return a good unit as faulty (such as people who cant see the 5ghz channel). Another of those is where there has been physical componet failures (a standard type of failure usually) and the company has started modifying that specific componet and sending the kit back out. To me, if it's the later of the two then I wouldnt feel comfortable having the product.

Of course, As it's bought as a whole, then the power adapter doing out would count as a refurb too, so in that situation a refurb would be as good as a new unit. NG are only commting a fraud if they refuse to honor their 30d warranty. They dont require registration for the 30d warranty so not being able to register is not a fraud, as many people who are not senior forum members will understand. I do admit that customers shouldnt need to trawl through a web KB to find the answer, Netgear should instead placed a refurb serial on the unit and alter the registration page to reflect a 30d warranty. BTW, To my knowledge, none of the regular posters here are NG staffers, not even the OPs. I am sure some trawl the forums, and some probably reply. I just dont know who they are (I dont really care tbh).

You know no one will pop here and say 'I'm netgear staff'. I agree, I would not buy any refurb. Actually I would say for most electronics manufacture do not offer 1 year warranty. There are other manufacture who sells from their online store with limited warranty etc.

I would think at least they can register but because the refurb are handle by third party and netgear must keep that very simple. For the most part 30days can allow some brick and mortar places to honor exchange etc. I think manufacture is making store to handle the issues and give the user very low price. If you have Receipt AND Unit is faulty AND you have given notice then YES you are entitled to a refund or replacement.

Are you saying you have a faulty unit, and NetGear and the Reseller are BOTH refusing to help? Depending on country, the first point of contact for faults is generally the reseller. For web/phone/mail orders the contract date normally starts on the day of item receipt, or in the case of a non-signed item the anticipated delivery date. We cant help with these issues, but where did you buy it from, what did they say when you made the complaint, and did you forward the complaint to netgear?

If you dont get joy from that then you could try to find a email addy for someone internal who can deal with it (I never see them kicking about). Or you could contact them through their head office, phone and ask for complaints (might not work) or write letters and address it to complaints. Send it recorded/certified so you have proof of delivery. But again, Netgear email support was crystal clear that they will not take returns of refurbished routers, period, despite fraudulent representations about '30 day warranty'. See the direct quotes from email support below. 6:13:00 PM: 'I would like to inform you that we will not be able to process the RMA if the product is not registered. In order to register the product we require the correct serial number of the product.' 9:52:00 PM: 'I can perceive that your unit does not have a serial number with it. Regarding your concern, please note that units without a serial number are said to be factory refurbished units.

Such units do not hold any warranty with Netgear. Since your unit does not hold any warranty with Netgear, we would be unable to replace your unit.' Komal Srivastava Technical Support NETGEAR, Inc. Convinced yet?

Legal action? For the price of the unit, I don't think so. I would rather the truth about the company's dishonest practice be out anyway, than to convince some company VP to silence the squeaky wheel with a replacement router. If you go to this Netgear Registration FAQ and look at the last entry it tells you how to register a refurbished router with no serial number. It's too bad that one Netgear webpage says you can do it and another says you can't. My product does not have a serial number - how do I register it?

If your product does not have a serial number, it has been refurbished. The serial number is not required to register your product. Send email to with:.the subject line 'Register a refurbished product'.Product name.Your NETGEAR customer number or full contact information.
